One of the Biggest Ego Trips International Airlines have is by having their own Ground staff at Once a Day Airports. Delta have been shrewd on having minimal own staffing levels and using contractors for the bulk of the work.

I used to joke that JAL had more staff at ORD than Premium Passengers thats why the Airline lost so much money. Apparently their ORD Departure Terminal move from their own T5 operation to T3 and AA saved them a small fortune and helped with the ultimate reward of survival.
