But even she was questioning the rules.

OP is asking this obviously because he/she has already bought the ticket and just asking if a 2.5 hr connection is doable. It is. BA is generally quite on time as long as its not early morning or late afternoon then ATC might come into play.
That's what I meant. Technically, it's possible, but there is no guarantee the employee in charge in ZRH will be doing it. A very good chance it will happen, an even better chance that upon calling the supervisor it happen - but not an absolute guarantee. I've seen really good staff from Swissport (they're doing BA at ZRH, aren't they?) and terrible one.. so, I wouldn't build my whole plans on them checking the luggage through on 2 PNRs, even if they should..

Also, the flight in question (BA717) doesn't tend to have spectacular on-time performance, at least not according to FlightStats. 1.9 out of 5 isn't good if you've a tight connection in average, from the last 62 flights, 3 got cancelled (meaning he might be put on another flight and might make it - his luggage even less so), 7 had a delay considered "excessive" (imho making him miss his connection) and another 7 are called "very late" - giving him at least a run to make the plane, if at all. Another 10 were late - probably making the connection, but certainly not much time to spare, and just 35, ie 56% were on time, giving him plenty of time.

If he already booked the connection (you probably assume this correctly) then I would probably risk it myself, but definitely pack more than enough in the carry-on, as there is quite a good risk the travel won't go as planed.
