Maybe I was just lucky, but the Star Alliance lounge at PVG accepted one of those passes from me on a couple different occasions, and my experience was that the lounge was head and shoulders above any I have experienced in the US - much more than just cheese n' crackers and cookies to eat! It can't hurt to ask, and besides United is a member of Star Alliance so it seems to me like it should be accepted. Hope this helps.
