When I first read your post I though 'you must be kidding, what are the grounds for complain'? Then I re-read it again and understood your complaint. So I can sympathise with the crew for the mis-communication.
That said, if they replied verbatim what you say, this is not good. But if they replied "you didn't want to be woken up for breakfast so I though you didn't want any", this is again slightly different. Devil is in the detail.
