Selcuk is a beautiful town with good hotels and very good places to eat. It is very close to Ephesus and the Virgin's house which is a very peaceful place to visit. People are incredibly friendly and welcoming but you also appreciate you are in Turkey. Look at Trip Advisor for restaurant recommendations. I've been to many over the year and never had a poor meal.
Visit Ephesus either in the early morning or late afternoon. At other times you will have to compete with bus loads of people off cruise ships docked in Kusadasi and it's not pleasant. It's also cooler in the mornings and evenings and far more relaxing to make your way around, don't underestimate the size of it.
Sirince is also worth a visit and not too far from Selcuk.
Kusadasi, well it depends what you want. It's brash, full of tourists, cruise ships, high rise concrete, relatively heavy traffic and IMO best avoided.
To visit places beyond Selcuk I tend to stay on the D550 road which leads south out of Selcuk. The journey is more pleasant, the road is quieter and more scenic.
Hope this helps.
