OP: Unlike WN, AA mileage redemption to Hawaii will be the same from "Michigan" as it would be from the West Coast. If you are going to redeem sufficient miles for J/F, why spend 3 - 4 hours on WN, go through the hassle of having to recheck bags (WN does not interline). Even with a mixed itinerary (AA/HA, US/HA), your bags will be checked through, enjoy J/F service for the entire trip.
