You cannot "abuse the benefits" because you are entitled to these benefits.

Incorrect. All lounges I have visited as UA*no-status simply wrote down my SEN number or scanned my SEN card and let me in. I couldn't find anything in the rules that would require to collect miles on the same account.

It's not surprising that a large number of people with status started collecting in a different program considering the reduced mileage credit on M&M (some expensive fares now earn only 50% instead of 100%, others only 25% instead of 50%) in combination with the high cost associated with booking an award, and the large number of miles required to obtain any status in the first place.

Of course I can imagine that M&M is upset that they may have to pay for the lounge access but don't get any money back for crediting miles. But they designed the system to encourage this behavior. For me it's bye-bye M&M. For me the program is no longer attractive.
