A group with ties to Trans World Airlines ' machinists union has now emerged as a possible contender for the beleaguered carrier.

The consortium, with potential backing from deep-pocketed Triarc Cos. and financier Carl Icahn, plans to compete for TWA against AMR Corp., parent of American Airlines, and Jet Acquisitions Group Inc., which has yet to make the $50 million escrow deposit necessary to bid.
