I'm trying to upgrade a flight which is now showing as J1 which from my experience means its probably oversold.

Do airlines count seats taken by other agents as "sold" and re-release them some point before the flight ie is that J1 really only 1 J seat but other seats may be held by other agents so more seats may actually be available somewhere?
