Actually, that's not how it works.

You missed the built-in app functionality, which lives in the left-hand menu (the three parallel horizontal lines in the upper-left corner). The menu item is called "Wi-Fi & entertainment." They really should make it more prominent.
It sounds as if what you did was bypass the app entirely and use your browser.
