I agree with the above posts that in tourist areas you will likely not have problems. I did run into one gas station/convenience store that would not swipe my card even though they had the reader. Most bus ticket machines and parking machines will not accept cards without a chip. There are some great threads on here and even a spreadsheet that show numerous US based cards that now have chip and pin.
