You may occasionally encounter a clerk who doesn't know how to swipe a magnetic-stripe card. I have friends who have had this happen in more remote areas.

The major issue is with machines like ticket kiosks and toll booths. They often work only with chip & pin cards.

Unrelated to the magnetic stripe: if a clerk asks whether you'd rather have the transaction in dollars, say no. This is a major rip-off.
