Same here - I once told the check-in staff that my carry-on might be over the weight limit and they just took a look and said that it looked fine. Plus, the rule of having one piece of hand luggage is not that much enforced either, based on my experience.

Ryanair on the other hand, will weigh your stuff at three checkpoints, especially after the duty free shops

To answer the OP though, I'm a big fan of a classic weekender bag or anything with shoulder straps!
