That's my personal situation -- perhaps for others your scenario is more likely. (The other consideration is that if you cancel the trip all together you could get jammed for 2 fees)
I make the determination on a case-by-case basis.
I had a series of trips last year for a client with lots of different locations that had a pattern of asking me in the middle of a visit to go from Location A to Location C instead of Location B. Booked two one-ways all the time for them (even booked some of my personal travel as one-ways during that time, in the even that they extended a trip and I had to fly directly to my personal destination).
Now I have a client that only has one main location and is usually pretty firm about site visits, but will occasionally delay an entire trip by a full week or cancel it altogether. I always book RTs for them.
For domestics, the price is usually the same for either method, so it's just about what kind of flexibility you might need.
