They would routinely leave F seats open, or bump up non-revs to F that I witnessed on several occasions when I was on the F list. Delta automated clearing of upgrades (and standbys)
years ago. One's progress on the upgrade list is visible on the gate screens at many airports (and on the app, at least for Android).

That's the routine. Get the F boarding pass when scanning one's original coach pass, and standbys get coach seat assignments when scanning the security clearance card.
