Here's what I was thinking when mentioning free or low cost Wi-Fi:
Free
- Boingo for eligible Amex Platinum members (Wi2, NTT Docomo, BB Mobile Point)
- Starbucks
- 7Spot -- Seven & i Group stores, including 7-Eleven, Ito-Yokado, Seibu, Sogo, Denny's, and Loft
- NTT East/Flets
- Manta -- Tokyo Metro Subway Stations
Low-Cost
- Wireless Gate/Yodobashi -- ¥390/month (Wi2, BB Mobile Point, EO Mobile)
- Boingo Asia-Pacific Plan -- $9.95/month (Wi2, NTT Docomo, BB Mobile Point)
- BB Mobile Point -- ¥667/week
- Wi2 -- ¥2,000/week
- Skype Wi-Fi - $0.06-$0.22/minute (Wi2, BB Mobile Point, Fon)
I haven't tried some of the free services, so I don't know how good or bad they are. Perhaps someone with experience can let us know.
I have a WiMAX account that includes Wi-Fi in the base ¥390/month rate. In fact, I don't usually use WiMAX any more, just the Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi providers on my WiMAX service include Wi2, BB Mobile Point, UQ and livedoor. I'll probably drop the WiMAX account altogether soon and just use the Boingo Amex Platinum service.
Wi2 and BB Mobile Point seem to be pretty widely deployed. I have MAC address authentication set up on Wi2 for my mobile devices, and I find that email and other apps are frequently synced just from walking by places with access points.
