Using Avios to upgrade from CW to First
I would also not go for a 1 hour "connection" on separate tickets and separate airlines.

The angst, stress and pain about potentially missing or actually missing the first leg of such a long haul journey is not worth it.

I'd fly the night before and treat it as part of the holiday / trip and enjoy a relative sleep in etc.
