Rental Car Tech questions

1) Late model Nissan Altima with the keyless start pushbutton and the key fob nearby in my purse

"Invalid Key ID" message seen when trying to start

Why?

2) Odd experience... same rental car

Leave the hotel, press the unlock button on the key fob, open the car door.

See coffee in the cup holder.
Think... 'Hmm, I don't remember leaving coffee in the car.'
See water bottle in the cup holder that I also don't recall leaving.

But this is the morning of a presentation to a CEO..., so I thought maybe it's just nerves although I didn't feel particularly nervous.

Then I look in the back seat. See a black jacket that's definitely not mine.

This is not my rental car.
(Exact same color, make, model. Different state on the license plate)
Those New England states are all scrunched together :-).

Thoughts..
Should I lock it back or not?
Was it ever locked?
Did I really unlock it?
I decided to not try to lock it with my key fob just in case...

Then, I find MY nearby rental car.
Compare license plate to the license plate picture I took with my iPhone.
Check.

But then the "invalid key ID" upon trying to start.

Workaround:

I was always able to eventually make it start by changing state of the fob a couple times
(lock - unlock - no foot on brake - foot on brake) and then trying to start.
