I agree that IRROPS could be a mess. Even if the kid knew where to go, its not likely they would know how to deal with an agent.
My first solo trip when I was 14, I waited through a snow closing at PHL. Somehow I figured out to check at the TW counter for flight status, got to the gate for the first flight out, tossed my ticket into the box for the standby lottery, and got on that flight.
