You could always say you're considering their offer, then transfer, then call back to cancel. It's not like calling at that moment is your very last chance ever to cancel. Also, FWIW, I believe if you choose to close your account and it's not forcibly closed by Amex, then you have 30 days for a grace period in which to dispose of your MRs in whatever manner you choose.
