I like medallion UGs as much as the next guy/gal, but I also have to agree with
Often1's point -
price F where it will sell and stop worrying about UG schemes.
Then again, there's an MBA on VA Ave. with RM on his/her business card that has built a Powerpoint deck showing that leaving F seats open as carrots for elites drives additional discretionary purchases which ultimately generate more overall ROI than the incremental revenue lost by not selling the premium cabin fares.

As somebody whose work travel policies require the purchase of coach seats on domestic flights all this first class monetization already hurts me and I'd hate to see it go another step. I can't buy first, so the chance at an upgrade drives me to purchase Delta! If they succeed in selling out first on every flight then I might as well just become a mercenary. Upgrades do drive a lot of marginal revenue Delta's way.
