Actually, I did exactly that when I graduated from college.
I took a package instead of a lump sum.... and was able to do some shopping before moving... where furniture was less expensive... and the new company shipped it from college to my first job.
Of course, if I was the OP... I would have an apartment lined up already if I was going to take the lump sum.... and just move directly into it... vs. crashing with a friend.
