An airliner carrying 150 Spanish soccer supporters collided with a British cargo plane on a runway at Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport today, killing the cargo plane's co-pilot. Authorities said the Air Liberte plane was about to take off for Madrid after the European soccer cup final in Paris when it collided with the cargo plane bound for Luton.
This collision occurred at 0100 GMT (9 pm EDT, Wednesday). The Shorts 330 twin engine cargo plane belongs to Stream Line company. The pilot was also injured and taken to hospital. His injuries are not serious.
"The collision killed one person on the spot, the co-pilot of the cargo plane," said an airport statement. "There were no other victims, fortunately," the statement said.
The Air Liberte plane had been cleared for take-off on the airport's main north runway.
The cargo plane was due to head out for Luton airport and was on a side runway waiting for clearance at the time of the collision. Both planes were removed to a holding area for air accident investigators to begin their inquiry.
