Once Gold is reached, it is preferable (to me anyway) to continue using that alliance to receive the benefits (nicer Lounge, IRROPS support, possibly higher OpUp rate etc.)

If, as you say, once gold is achieved we then run off to another alliance to try to get whatever level there, the point of gaining gold seems a bit moot….
