Under the current system, if you need to pay to select a seat, then you can't pay unless you have a ticket.

However, if you're entitled to free seat pre-allocation by status, you can pre-allocate a seat as soon as you have a reservation, even if you don't yet have a ticket.

This is particularly notable if doing a UuA. There are many reports of non-status passengers who've been frustrated whilst waiting to be re-ticketed, because they can't pay for a seat until that's been done. In contrast, status passengers can pick a seat as soon as there's a reservation for the seat in the upgraded cabin, even if it then takes BA many weeks to re-issue the ticket.
