Train from Rome to Naples (if you can, splurge on the premium class car... it's not that pricey and considerably more comfortable, and less crowded I found), and then hop a ferry to whichever island you're starting your journey on. I just got back from Capri a few weeks ago and wish I was there right now! Enjoy.
