Other than that, your only real option is you still want to fly Nov 2 to Nov 9 is to cancel the award ticket and book a flight on a different airline. A quick look on Kayak shows no nonstop flights to SJD from ATL. AA offers connections in Dallas and UA offers connections in Houston.
OP has a DL award ticket and might not have AA or UA miles (etc.) even if award space is available on those carriers.

If AM has low award availability on the required flights, making the change to connect through MEX should be easy. DL can open award space on any DL operated flight and in these circumstances would waive any routing rules provided that connections are legal in terms of MCT.

OP should double check whether the transit in MEX requires a visa or similar.
