Most current data here in LA indicates the plane had 80 aboard, and a crew of five. The pilot must have felt he could have controlled the reported "stabilizer trim" problem, as he told controllers that he was turning around and heading south to LAX.

Close to where the plane went down (roughly 15 nautical miles) is Point Mugu Naval Air Station, which has a runway longer than those at LAX. LAX is 39 nautical miles from the crash site.
