The only hidden feature I can think of that you may have read about is when you're connecting to a domestic U.S. flight from a BA longhaul flight. Many U.S. airports have baggage drop off locations right after customs, and if BA tags your bags all the way to your final destination then you simply drop them off once you clear customs and nobody checks what your allowance is.
