First, thanks for the post. I worked on this for quite a while yesterday and could not get the return (ATL-MIA-ORD-LAX) to work at all (was working these same dates in fact). The inventory is there but the pricing engine won't cooperate. Best I could do is ATL-MIA-LAX on the return (or ATL-DFW-LAX for much lower miles). Still not a bad run.
Now that you have something you're okay with, I'd put that on hold and then call AA and ask them to price what you actually want, telling them you'd like to make an adjustment to the flight you have on hold. I did this for a recent mileage run and they were able to price and change my itinerary and didn't charge me a phone booking fee. She just adjusted the held itinerary for me to reflect what i wanted, and then i hopped back online and booked it.
