I've been posting on and off on the Luxury Hotels forum for about a month, invariably about BKK hotels.
I think part of my confusion and angst comes from the fact that BKK simply has a ton of luxury hotels. Like....a lot! So, I really don't want to make a 'mistake', as this is my first time to BKK and I'm bringing my wife.
A little about my trip and preferences.
Nights 1-4: BKK
Nights 5-8: Koh Samui
Nights 9: BKK
What I'm planning on is the Siam for the first 4 nights, the Conrad KS for the second 4 nights, and the St. Regis for the last night.
The above review kind of leaves me sketched out....weird location...too quiet...odd airport pick-up...dark rooms.
I know the location is more 'quiet', but this is almost a selling point to me, in a city that is invariably described as chaotic and quite insane. Sometimes I like my lux hotel to be a little off the beaten track (thinking: don't want my NYC hotel to be anywhere near Times Square, don't want my Charleston hotel to be on King Street, don't want my Paris hotel near the Eiffel Tower, etc), as the seclusion is a perk, not a detriment. That being said, this is my first time to BKK, and don't want the seclusion to be a huge negative...
Right now I'm booked into the Mai Nam Suite.
I've met the GM and his enthusiasm and candor really, really makes me want to stay here (the 'labor of love' aspect of this hotel is quite apparent).
Am I making a mistake by staying at such a boutique hotel on my first trip to BKK???
Also, what are my options for late night street food snacking? Am I so secluded this is basically not an option? (That would be unfortunate!)
The Siam is not necessarily dark - only some of the suites. The 6 Mai Nam Suites are one up from entry level - the best are the 4 that are situated on the corner of the building - these are very light, but only with partial River views. I think you will like them.
The Siam has some superb ideas for local experiences, especially local restaurants and street food options. They will take you there via their own boat and this is a very special experience. I would check out a few options prior to your stay and maybe organise things ahead of time. I would also book some spa treatments, as The Siam's Opium Spa is by far the best in Bangkok.
