My one and only DL upgrade as FB Gold: LGA-BOS on an E170 on a Sunday afternoon.

Indeed, is done automatically.

I got upgraded (with my companion - a regular DL SM member) from ATL to CUN, where I as a FB PE *surprisingly* was number one on the upgrade list.
My upgrade chances on LGA-ATL were really low, as I was number 12 out of 15 or so..

So yes, you can get lucky depending on the route.
