Check post #4 above- there is indeed an elevator. I have used it when my knee was seriously injured from rock climbing and I made it without an issue- less stress here than in the metro system of Rome or Termini to be sure.
No need to use the steps if you don't want to. Also depending where you are headed in Rome- if you turn left when leaving the hotel there is the road which leads down to a series of main streets.
