Once at IAH I saw a bro take a full size suitcase through the checkpoint and he came out the other side with it, so not sure what happened at the plane. I presume it was gate checked for free. What got him was when the TSA agent asked if he had any liquids in there and he said "Nahhhh..." They went through his bag. This is all after they had to tell him to take off his sunglasses when he handed over his ID and BP.
