Not sure about answers to your technical questions, but unless you have oneworld status, any suggestion on the website that you could assign exit rows for free was in error. I'm guessing your seat assignments wouldn't have "stuck" in the computer -- this has been my recent experience as a GO trying to reserve seats for non-status pax on separate bookings but the same flights. At OLCI the seat field was blank and we had to select anew.
