AMEX card downgrade declined (UK)

Hi All

Something very weird happened.

I cancelled my Gold charge card and not long after applied for the standard (green) charge card. I letter came through the post that my application was declined.

Why I deem it strange?

(1) I have a BA AMEX card, which I have had for nearly 3 years now. Always have paid the balance in full. Can't they see I already have one AMEX card with a perfect record?
(2) I am on a reasonably high income. I spent around £15k on the gold card before I cancelled it.
(3) My credit rating is (very) high and have a perfect record.
(4) surely if I was "worthy" of the gold card, I must be worthy of the lowly green card.

Just wondering, what is the logic in declining a downgrade to a perfect AMEX customer? I have always championed AMEX, to the point that I boycotted shops that didn't accept it. Is this how they pay for my loyalty?

Confused

I still have my BA AMEX, but definitely going to complain. If they don't fix it, I will cancel it and close my AMEX account for good. I am fed up with companies that simply ignore your loyalty.
