Carry on isn't a problem, we're only going for 3 weeks. All casual so mix and match, no iron clothing is easy to do.
Our TA, who's a good friend, hasn't take the train, with connections, herself. She booked the connection that RailEurope provided. Our flight usually arrives earlier than the 12:40 schedule and with carry-ons and debarking from J, I can't imagine that we wont be able to make an earlier Leonardo (the 3:08 would give us a 55 minute connection at Termini) even if we have to purchase new tickets. I'd rather get to Florence on our original schedule than later.
I figure that whatever happens will be out of our direct control and as long as we get to Florence that day, I'm fine with it.
I know I won't get anywhere arguing since my Italian is limited to "Parli Cajun?"

You didn't buy your tickets with Raileurope, did you? If so, you may have overpaid - better to buy direct from trenitalia.it. They do take American credit cards now and they have an English site.
