And to be sure, that does happen from time to time. In this case, I found the fare on one of the European Ebookers sites (at 753 euro, which is a bit above but very close to 999 USD)
ETA: Looks like this is the V-class VLRIE fare which allows one free stopover and one stopover at 50 euro.
