It depends on availability. The booking tool looks for availability all the way through, so if there are no reward seats available on the MAN-LHR sector, you won't be offered a flight.
I just made an Avios booking ex ABZ to LAX. No availability on same day connections despite there being up to 9 ABZ/LHR flights per day.
I put my start date ex ABZ as the day before the LAX flight and managed to find availability that way.
It means an overnight at LHR, but made the world of difference to the choice I had.
