Something I've also noticed while looking at availability is that there seems to be more when I input our starting point as LHR rather than as MAN.
I was under the impression that BA always offered you the connecting MAN-LHR flights as a matter of course?

It depends on availability. The booking tool looks for availability all the way through, so if there are no reward seats available on the MAN-LHR sector, you won't be offered a flight.
