Transferring money from Colombia to the U.S. can be a pain in the .... The cheapest option would be if you had Citibank accounts in both countries (and a Citigold account in Colombia). In that case you would not pay any fees on the transfer, though you would still get hit with the 0.4% transaction tax unless the transfer is made from a personal bank account and is under $4000 per month (the financial transaction tax is a bit complicated to explain, but each person can have one bank account that is exempt from this tax for the 1st $4000 of transactions monthly). The bigger issue is that it is time consuming and requires a lot of paper work to make a wire transfer happen. You need to show proof of paying prior years income tax and current proof of income to make this happen. The latter is fairly straightforward if you have an employer providing you a letter. If it is your own business it can be more difficult.
