Closing the loop on this one:

I did get checked in for the 4 pm flight. Got to the airport very early (1:45ish), since my conference was over and I wanted to get on the 3 pm. No problem. Got to the gates, DL announced that the 3 pm was cancelled and put me on the 2 pm, which had plenty of room in F.

Sometimes, good things happen.
