Definitely. I've seen it bounce from Y0 back to Y2 or Y3 then back down again. The upward tick could mean someone has cancelled and there is now availability, but could also mean that the cabin is still full and BA are willing to sell full price economy tickets on the expectation that others will cancel, or they will op-up some passengers.
There will be days when BA get it spot on and sell fill every seat in a cabin (or aircraft) without the need for an op-up. I wonder how often that does happen.
I know its futile, but I still find it interesting to watch changes
