As for Often1's answer that you support, my largely irrelevant opinion is that the risk outlined, while bearing a high impact, has a likelihood close to nil - which an extremely risk-averse person could mitigate by using the rate of an other company than FedEx and be left with the traditional rack rate dilemma.
Linking this to job ethics, when there is no actual downside for the employer - and
de facto only upsides, feels more like a demagogic blow than a rational leap, IMH and largely irrelevant O.
If I offended anybody I am very sorry. I just have the feeling that discussing this topic while accepting the premise of the OP instead of judging that very premise might be more constructive.

Often1 correctly notes that using a discount code without authorization does come with a risk. It's not the FedEx Purchasing/Travel Department that the OP has to be concerned about; it's the person who has the authority to "fire" an independent contractor.
