Yep it's perfectly fine to dim sum solo I used to do it all the time when I lived in Hong Kong. I'd go to a more traditional place instead of the fancy places and go in the morning. Dim sum is really more of a breakfast thing. You'll see lots of local enjoying dim sum while reading news paper.
