A lot will depend upon which system the property is using and what training the staff has had. I have stayed at many properties with multiple reservations and got my key programmed for the entire stay and it worked. I've been told my key has been programmed for the entire stay and it did not work. I've been on long reservations and some keys have gone bad mid-stay. Truly a YMMV situation.

2) Is it policy to tell all guests that "your keys must have been demagnetized"? I ask because there were at least 3 other parties on that final morning with room keys that would not work and we were all given the same excuse. On top of that, we had been granted Club access as the property was unable to place us on an SPG floor. THOSE keys worked fine straight through . . . until the last day, when it took 3 rekeying tries to get them to work to get to the club. Same issue for the other parties we chatted with. And we were all told "they must have demagnetized". No chance it was a system issue, right?

We'll talk about how the keys worked for the parking entry/exit and how Green Choice worked/didn't work in another thread.
Generic keys (lounges, parking, etc.) have a much more lenient requirement. Sometimes I've been tempted to insert an old key from another property to test it, but haven't.

FDCs are very prone to make up an excuse when they really don't know why, so it's anyone's guess. I was checking in at one property and they were just recovering from an extended power outage and their key system was not a battery backup! I was told maintenance had to make the rounds to resync all the doors with the key encoder. They did provide an escort to let me in and would provide keys once they got to my room. I just needed to go horizontal so I was good with that.
