I got shot down multiple times with a routing well under 20k but overflying YYZ on the return (SYD-BKK-IST-YUL-YVR-YYZ)
I expect there's some routing rules for TATL that doesn't allow it
In the end I just kept an eye out for SYD-SFO-YVR-YYZ and paid the change fee instead. A pair of UA seats did open up and I booked it within 12 hours of seeing availability
