As paulwuk has noted, linking bookings and getting free seat selection for someone on a separate booking but in the same cabin as you is a specific benefit for BA golds, ggls, and premiers. It isn't a oneworld benefit so doesn't apply for a non-BA oneworld emerald. So yes, you are left either to pay for seat selection or waiting until t-7 days.
