award seats are always in shorter supply, even if in Y. so if you have set dates when you have to travel, it's better to finalise your award tickets asap.
make your confirmed reservations for the award seats AND the purchased ticket. confirm with your travel agent when you have to pay by (and also finalise the award tickets) and if need be, get the paid ticket at a later date.
