Yeah had a great example of that last year - went to the Melbourne F1 and priced up a Jetstar flight. Once I added on what I could live with (i.e. a meal on a 7 hr flight), it was cheaper to go with BA - have everything included and enjoy the lounges through the trip. Always worth pricing it all up before committing.
